NEWBERG, Ore. – The Whitworth University volleyball team made it a clean sweep on Saturday at the Oregon Trail Classic with a pair of 3-0 victories on the second day of the tournament.
The Pirates improved to 4-0 this season and outscored their four opponents 12-2 in sets.
Whitworth defeated the College of New Rochelle (N.Y.) 25-14, 25-21, 25-15 in Saturday morning's match, hitting .255 as a team while holding the Blue Angels to a percentage of -0.10. Jessica Schmautz had 14 kills and 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. Madison Douglas added ten kills, while Erin White dished 38 assists. Laina Damon led the Bucs with 13 digs.
Whitworth closed the tournament with a 25-10, 25-12, 25-22 win over Johnson & Wales University (Colo.). The Pirates' hitting improved to .283, the highest of the four tournament matches. Schmautz led the way again with 16 kills and only one error for a blistering hitting percentage of .556. Lauren Budde added eight kills. Every Pirate player was able to play in the match.
Whitworth will return to action next weekend at the prestigious Emory National Tournament in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 7-8).
