Women's Tennis Falls to Whitman 8-1

SPOKANE, Wash. – Visiting Whitman rode the momentum of a big comeback in doubles to a sweep of the six singles matches in an 8-1 victory over Whitworth on Saturday at the Scotford Tennis Center.

The Missionaries, defending Northwest Conference champions, improved to 5-5 overall and 4-1 in the NWC.  The Pirates dropped to 1-6, 1-4.

The #1 Whitworth doubles team of Bella Hoyos and Jennifer Adams pulled out a hard-fought 8-6 win over Hanna Greenberg and Mary Hill.  The Missionaries' pair took a 4-3 lead after the match's first service break, but Whitworth broke right back and ended up winning five of the final seven games to pick up the win.

Whitman ran away at #2 doubles as Allie Wallin Lindsey Brodeck earned an 8-0 win over Emma Jo Wiley and Anabelle Burns.

Whitworth looked like it might take a 2-1 lead after doubles when Paige Rorhback and Ashley Wallin jumped to a 4-0 lead over Jana Klages-Miller and Jenna Gilbert.  But the Whitman pair rallied to win the match 9-8 by taking a 7-3 tiebreaker.

The Missionaries used that momentum, plus the absence of Adams in the Whitworth ladder, to sweep the six singles matches without losing a set.

The closest singles match came at #4 on the ladder where Gilbert defeated Rohrbach 6-4, 6-4.

Whitworth will return to action next weekend with matches at Linfield (Saturday) and Willamette (Sunday).
