PORTLAND, Ore. – Two first half goals were enough for the Whitworth Pirates, who defeated the Lewis & Clark Pioneers 2-1 in both teams' final game of the season.
Whitworth (12-5-3, 10-4-2 NWC) ends the year in third place, their third straight year finishing among the leaders of the Northwest Conference. Lewis & Clark (4-14-1, 2-13-1 NWC) dropped their final match of the season after defeating Whitman 3-2 in two overtimes on Saturday.
The Pirates nearly got themselves on the board in the match's first five minutes. A series of tic-tac-toe passes left the ball at the feet of Gabriella Coprivnicar, but Megan Sawyer saved her fourth minute blast.
Instead, Annie Clark scored Whitworth's first goal in the 14th minute. The junior's go-ahead goal was her first of the year and was Bucs' first goal against Lewis & Clark on the year after drawing 0-0 in Spokane.
Arielle Van Peursem put the Bucs up 2-0 just 53 seconds later. The senior volleyed home a 15th minute through ball from Coprivnicar for her sixth goal of the year.
After halftime, the Pios appeared ready to give the Prates a run for their money. Three minutes into the second half, Ella Viesturs fired a shot on goal, but it was saved by Molly Webster. Whitworth regained possession after the save and put Sawyer back to work with a shot on goal from Brixiada Mendoza.
Erin Lutz cut the Whitworth lead in half with a goal in the 77th minute. Lutz intercepted a pass from Webster and her shot just escaped the Pirate goalkeeper's grasp to fly into the right side of the net.
Webster would not be beaten again. The senior finished with three saves in the second half, including a diving stop on an 88th minute blast from Paige Barta, to earn a win in her final collegiate contest.
