SPOKANE, Wash. – Two goals from Hannah Rae Miller propelled the Whitworth Pirates to a 3-0 win over the Whitman Blues in Wednesday evening's Northwest Conference women's soccer contest.
The win snapped a short, two-match losing streak for the Pirates (8-4-3, 6-3-2 NWC). The Blues (3-11-1, 3-8 NWC) fell for the third consecutive time.
The Pirates were the aggressors from the start of the match. Senior forward Arielle Van Peursem fired away the game's first three shots in its first ten minutes, one of which was on goal. Rachel Wofford added another attempt in the 19th minute, but the Bucs were unable to beat Whitman goalkeeper Allie Seracuse early on.
Miller was the first Buc to beat Seracuse. The junior rocketed a shot past the Whitman goalkeeper to give the Pirates a lead in the 34th minute.
After entering halftime with a 1-0 lead the Pirates continued to be aggressive after the break. Gabriella Coprivnicar and Amanda Gerard both took shots within the second half's first ten minutes, but neither could put Whitworth up another goal.
Instead, Brixiada Mendoza gave the Bucs their second goal in the 79th minute. The freshman took a rebound near the edge of the penalty area before dribbling in and poking a shot over a charging Seracuse and into the back of the net.
Miller added another goal in the 87th minute. The junior forward took a pass from Van Peursem before chipping a shot high over Seracuse for her second goal of the match.
Up next, the Pirates travel to Forest Grove, Ore. to take on Pacific (Ore.). The Bucs and Boxers square off at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21.
