GRANTHAM, Penn. – The fifth-ranked Messiah Falcons used a dominating offensive performance to defeat the Whitworth Pirates 4-0 on Saturday evening.
The loss dropped Whitworth to 1-1 on the season while the Falcons moved to 2-0 on the year.
The Falcons controlled much of the match from its outset, scoring their first goal in just the 12th minute and not allowing Whitworth to take a shot on goal in the first half.
The match's first goal came off the foot of Brooke Firestone. Firestone gathered in a ball that deflected off a Pirate and slotted a goal inside the left post to give the Falcons an early lead.
Messiah added on in the 37th minute. Maddie Kohl took in a pass from Courtney Dunlop, dribbled around two defenders, and fired a goal into the right side of the net. The goal gave the Falcons a commanding 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Kelly Wucherer gave Whitworth its first shot on goal of the match just after the break. The senior midfielder freed herself enough to take the shot, but it was stopped by Falcon goalkeeper Sarah Yunez.
The Pirates would have another opportunity on a header from Arielle Van Peursem, but Yunez stopped that shot as well to maintain her shutout.
Julia Kyne scored the Falcons' third goal of the match just five minutes after Van Peursom's header. Kyne received a pass in the middle of the box and slid in a one-touch goal.
Brooke Firestone added her second goal of the match in the 76th minute to give Messiah the 4-0 lead it carried to the finish.
The Falcons finished the match with advantages in shots (30-3), shots on goal (8-2), and corner kicks (14-1). Molly Webster made 4 saves for Whitworth.
Up next, the Pirates take on the College of Idaho on Saturday, Sept. 8. The match will be hosted by Whitman College and is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
