Fourth Straight Win Keeps Pirates Undefeated in NWC

FORREST GROVE, Ore. – Strong defense combined with a patient, controlling attack seems to be a recipe for success for Whitworth women's soccer.

The Pirates used that recipe on Sunday to extend their winning streak to four matches with a 1-0 victory over the Pacific (Ore.) Boxers.

With the win, Whitworth (5-3, 4-0 NWC) remains undefeated in the Northwest Conference while Pacific (0-6-2, 0-3-1) is still searching for its first win this season.

The Pirates win also keeps them tied for first in the Northwest Conference standings. They take on the conference's other undefeated team, Pacific Lutheran, on Sunday, Oct. 1.

From the match's outset, Whitworth was in control. The Pirates maintained possession of the ball for the majority of the first half and created quality chances even if none resulted in goals. The defense was stellar; once again allowing no shots on goal for a full half.

Even if the opportunities didn't give the Pirates any goals, Whitworth's first half play did result in statistical advantages. They entered the half with a 7-2 advantage in shots and a 1-0 lead in shots on goal.

The result's of Whitworth's play showed up on the scoreboard in the 52nd minute. Shirley Chandler made an excellent run from her outside back position, taking a pass from the midfield before sliding a pass of her own across the goal's mouth to Leah Corra. The forward finished Chandler's pass to give the Pirates the lead.

The goal was Corra's third of the season and came off Chandler's first assist of the year.

Up 1-0, the Pirates didn't let up. They totaled four shots and two shots on goal in the second half, and only allowed Pacific two true chances. In the end, they would finish with six more shots and two more shots on goal than the Boxers.

Goalkeeper Sienna Tanner earned her first shutout of the season, saving two shots in Whitworth's second shutout of the weekend. The Pirates haven't allowed a goal in three straight matches.

Next weekend, Whitworth returns to the Whitworth Soccer Field to take on traditional Northwest Conference powers Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran. The Pirates battle the Loggers on Saturday and take on the Lutes Sunday. Both matches start at Noon.
