Pirate Women Finish Second at NWC Fall Classic

SUNRIVER, Ore. – The Whitworth women's golf team posted its best showing at the Northwest Conference Fall Classic in six seasons, finishing in second place as Chelsea Bayley took second in the individual standings.

Whitworth posted a final tally of 325-323 – 648 after Sunday's second round at the Woodlands at Sunriver Golf Course.  Defending champion George Fox won the tournament by 25 strokes.  The Pirates finished nine strokes ahead of Whitman.

Bayley finished the tournament with a total score of 75-77 – 152 (+8) to tie with George Fox's Kristin Elich (76-76).  GFU's Sydney Maluenda held on to her first-round lead and took medalist honors with a final tally of 73-77 – 150 (+6).  Michal Schuster finished in fifth place with her score of 75-80 – 155.

Yvonne LaCoursiere (86-81 – 167) moved up the standings to 15th place.  Katie Ochoa (93-85 – 178) improved her score by eight strokes on Sunday and tied for 22nd place.  Cindy Tapia (89-94 – 183) tied for 25th place.

The final team scores were:  George Fox 309-314 – 623; Whitworth 325-323 – 648; Whitman 335-322 – 657; Lewis & Clark 343-319 – 662; Pacific Lutheran 358-338 – 696; Linfield 378-351 – 729; Pacific (Ore.) 409-406 – 815; Puget Sound 425-432 – 857; Willamette incomplete.

The NWC Fall Classic counts as 25% of the final conference standings.  The NWC Spring Classic will also count as 25% and the final NWC Tournament will count as 50%.

Whitworth last finished as high as second place at the NWC Fall Classic in 2009.  The Pirates have won this tournament once – in 2008.
