NORTH CENTRAL, Ill. - In the preliminary races of the 2017 Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, Kayla Leland finished second overall in the mile run and fifth overall in the 800-meter run to advance to the finals for both events. The mile run will begin at 11 a.m. PST and the 800 run will start at 1:15 p.m PST.
17 individuals competed in both the 800-meter and mile run preliminaries. In the mile run, the top three from each of the two heats advance as well as the next four best times and for the 800, the top two from each heat advance as well as the next four fastest finishers.
Leland crossed the finish line in 5:00.74 to win the first heat of the mile. Pomona Pitzer's Maya Weigel finished first in the second heat with a time 5:00.54 to lead all 17. Emily Richards from Ohio Northern, who came in as first ranked in the mile, finished second in heat two with a time of 5:00.65. Leland's time was just 0.20 seconds behind first place Weigel.
In the 800-meter run, Leland finished third in her heat and fifth overall to advance to the finals with a time of 2:13.91. Richards finished first in Leland's heat in 2:13.26 and Brittany Kozlowski from St. Norbert finished in 2:12.45 in heat two to lead all 17 competitors.
This is Leland's first trip to the NCAA Div. III Indoor Championships in the mile, but her second in the 800-meter. Last year, Leland finished 17th in 2:21.52.
