Softball Sweeps Two on Sunday

SPOKANE, Wash. – Rheanne Lewis drove in five runs to lead Whitworth to 10-2 and 9-1 victories over visiting Lewis & Clark College in Northwest Conference softball action on Sunday at Diana Marks Field.

The Pirates (23-8 overall, 17-4 NWC) won the completion of Saturday's second game in five innings and took Sunday's first scheduled game in six frames.  Whitworth and Lewis & Clark (11-22, 6-17) will complete the series at noon on Monday.

The Pirates broke open a close game with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and ended the game with two more in the bottom of the fifth.

Whitworth had taken a 2-0 lead on Saturday before play was suspended by rain.  The Pioneers quickly pulled within 2-1 on Sunday with a run in the top of the second inning on Emily Drevdahl's RBI double. 

The Pirates answered in the bottom of the second when Desi Graham moved to third on a double by Kaylie Lowery and scored on a Lewis sacrifice fly.

Sydney Cross drove a double the opposite way in the top of the fourth to drive in another L&C run, pulling the guests within 3-2.  However, Whitworth put the game out of reach with five runs in the next half inning.

Lowery singled to left to drive in the first two runs.  She scored on a Lewis double to center field.  Kinsey McNaught followed with an RBI single and Logan Miller doubled later in the inning to drive in McNaught.

Graham's double in the fifth inning gave the Pirates a 9-2 lead.  She scored on another Lewis sacrifice fly, ending the game on the NCAA's eight-run rule.

Brynn Radke finished 3-3 at the plate for the Bucs, while Lewis had three RBIs in only one official at-bat. 

Madelyn Carlson threw all five innings to improve to 9-5 this season.  She allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts.  Savannah Dickson (7-9) allowed eight runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings for L&C.

Game 2 – Whitworth 9, Lewis & Clark 1 (6 innings)
Whitworth jumped out to a big early lead thanks to a five-run second inning and cruised to victory in six frames, thanks again to the NCAA's eight-run rule.

L&C scored its only run in the top of the first on Olivia Brackin's RBI single.

The first two runs in the second scored on sacrifice flies by Maddy Thomas and Radke.  The Pirates continued the rally with two outs.  Lowery singled in a run and Lewis followed with a two-run single for a 5-0 advantage.

Thomas tripled to the opposite field in the third inning for a 6-1 lead.  The Bucs added another run in the fifth and scored the final runs two in the bottom of the sixth.  Desi Graham had an RBI double in the sixth and Lowery followed with another sac fly.

Sara Gayer and Morgan Portlock had two hits each, while Lowery, Lewis and Thomas all had a pair of RBIs.

Drea Schwaier-Wolf improved to 13-3 after allowing one run on five hits in six innings.  Drevdahl started in the circle for the Pioneers and fell to 2-3 after giving up five runs on five hits in two innings.
