Pirates Sweep Short-Handed Bearcats

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth University made short work of short-handed Willamette, sweeping the visiting Bearcats 9-0 in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Sunday.

The Pirates improved to 5-4 overall and 5-2 in the NWC and have won four matches in a row and five of their last six.  Willamette, which had only four available players, dropped to 1-6, 1-5.

Caleb Hughes and Shane Sandlin improved their record to 8-1 as a Whitworth doubles pair this season after dispatching Willamette's Derek Lund and Jesse Mackinney 8-2 at #2 on the ladder.

Drew Brigham and Drew Adams won by the same score at #1 doubles over Aaron Schechter and Colin Yamaguchi.  Blake Miller and Layne Ryerson won by default at #3 doubles because the Bearcats were unable to field a team.

The four singles matches that were contested went about the same as the two doubles contests.  Ryerson was done first, defeating Lund 6-2, 6-0 at #3 and Miller followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Yamaguchi at #2.  Then Brigham topped Schechter 6-2, 6-2 at #1 on the ladder.

Adams ended the last singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mackinney at #4.

Whitworth will take on the Community Colleges of Spokane later on Sunday in an exhibition match.  Then the Pirates will travel to Orlando, Florida next week for the team's annual spring break trip.
