SPOKANE, Wash. – The visiting Linfield Wildcats held on to an early lead to defeat the Whitworth Pirates 1-0 in Sunday afternoon's Northwest Conference men's soccer contest on the Whitworth Soccer Field.
Linfield (5-13-1, 3-9-1 NWC) did not take many shots but came away with the victory. Whitworth (9-9-1, 7-6) finished with a 20-5 advantage in shots but the Wildcats did not give away any easy opportunities.
The Pirates put Wildcats goalkeeper Cameron Perron to work early, attempting three shots, all on target, in the first four minutes.
Linfield took the 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute. Connor Heintz sent a pass up the field to Henry Rosenfeld who broke away down the right side of the field and fired a shot into the goal.
Whitworth continued to control possession in the second half but struggled to put shots on target.
Isaias Flores earned a red card in the 78th minute, leaving the Wildcats one short for the remainder of the match. Linfield held the Pirates to only two shots after that point, despite being held back on their own defensive end.
Perron recorded six saves for the Wildcats. Bo Broyles finished with one save for the Pirates. Whitworth took eight corner kicks compared to Linfield's three.
Whitworth will close the season next weekend with one last NWC match against Whitman in Spokane.
