LA VERNE, Calif. – La Verne scored three second half goals to shut out the visiting Whitworth men's soccer team in Sunday evenings non-conference matchup.

The Pirates drop to 2-3-1 on the season. The Leopards improve to 4-2.

Whitworth's first scoring opportunity came in the 27th minute on a sliding shot by Drew Williams, but it bounced off the feet of Leopards goalkeeper Kevan Rehmani for the save. That turned out to be the only shot on goal of the half for the Pirates.

The Leopards got their offense going in the 32nd minute as Jovanni Garcia and Daniel Ortega forced Jesus Nunez to make back-to-back saves to keep the match scoreless.

La Verne quickly took control of the match in the second half as Garcia fired in two goals within five minutes of each other for the 2-0 lead. Garcia has now recorded seven goals on the season.

The Pirates ramped up the offensive pressure, tallying three shots on goal in as many minutes, but Rehmani saved all three. Whitworth outshot the Leopards 11-6 in the second half.

The Leopards sealed the match as Cesar Rodriguez found his way to an open goal shot after Nunez came to the top of the box to block the previous Leopard attempt.

Both teams recorded 14 shots on the match. Chase Reidt led the Pirate offense with four shots, two on goal. Nunez and Rehmani each tallied six saves.

The Pirates open Northwest Conference play next weekend on the road against Linfield (Sept. 21) and Willamette (Sept. 22).
