SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth men's soccer team looks to get back in the win column as they head to California for matches against Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne, two more Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools.

The Pirates are 2-0 against SCIAC schools this season, defeating Chapman and Redlands on the road to open the year.

The Bucs open the weekend against Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 4:00 pm. Whitworth then battles La Verne the following day at 6:00 pm.

Live statistics and video links will be available on the Whitworth men's soccer schedule.

The Pirates: Whitworth (2-2) struggled on the offensive end after falling behind in its two matches of the Whitworth Puma Classic last weekend. The Bucs could not make the comeback after trailing 2-0 before halftime in their home opener against Carroll (Mont.). Freshman Jaime Rodriguez scored the Pirates only goal of the weekend in the 2-1 loss.

The Pirates were shut out 1-0 by UC Santa Cruz, despite spending a majority of the second half on the Banana Slugs' end of the field. The Bucs attempted one shot on goal in the loss.

The Sagehens: Pomona-Pitzer (0-3) enters the weekend searching for its first win. The Sagehens are also seeking their first goal after being outscored 8-0 over their first three matches. Pomona-Pitzer finished last season 7-11 overall and 6-8 in conference play for a fifth-place finish in the SCIAC. Whitworth and Pomona-Pitzer have never faced each other in soccer.

The Leopards: La Verne (3-2) is coming off two losses against Northwest Conference opponents George Fox and Pacific (Ore.) The Leopards return a majority of their 2018 squad, including second team All-SCIAC member Johnny DeRueda. The Leopards added junior transfer Jovanni Garcia to the roster who has already tallied five goals and four assists this season. La Verne finished 7-9-1 overall and 5-9 in the SCIAC last season.

Looking Ahead: The Pirates open NWC play in Oregon with contests at Linfield on Saturday, Sept. 21 and Willamette on Sunday, Sept. 22.

The Coach: Morgan Cathey continues a long line of highly successful men's soccer coaches at Whitworth University that began with Einar Thorarinsson (1986-1994) and continued with Sean Bushey (1996-2012), who now coaches in Minnesota.

Cathey enters his seventh season as men's soccer coach at Whitworth in the fall of 2019.  He has led the Pirates to a record of 72-30-15 through his first six seasons.  He guided the Pirates to three consecutive Northwest Conference titles from 2014-16 and made three straight appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament.  Cathey's record against NWC opponents is 54-17-13 over his first five seasons.
