SPOKANE, Wash. – Two first half goals were too much to overcome as the Whitworth men's soccer team was defeated by Carroll College 2-1 in the Bucs' home opener Friday afternoon.

This was the Pirates' first loss of the season, dropping them to 2-1. The Saints improve to 1-1-1.

Carroll took the early lead three minutes in when Jeronimo Huerta scored the first goal off a short pass from Nick Lowrimore.

Christian Pumpelly almost evened the score on a shot from the middle of the box, but Carroll goalkeeper Kaden Connor was there to make the save.

The Saints took a 2-0 lead in the 37th minute when Lowrimore sent in a pass from the edge of the box to freshman Rory Bloy who ran between defenders to fire in the goal.

The Bucs came out strong in the second half as Jaime Rodriguez cut the lead to 2-1 five minutes in. Azzam Azzam was credited with the assist.

The Pirates spent a significant amount of time in the Saints' box throughout the match, but Carroll consistently managed to clear the ball before Whitworth could find good shot opportunities.

The Saints finished the match with the lead in corner kicks (6-5), shots (16-12) and shots on goal (8-6).

The second match of the Whitworth Puma Classic featured Whitman College and UC Santa Cruz. The Blues held the Banana Slugs scoreless in a 1-0 victory for their first win of the season.

Whitman controlled possession for most of the match, outshooting UCSC 25-4. Owen Davis-Bower got the start in goal for the Blues, only needing to make one save in the win.

The lone goal came in the 81st minute as Whitman's Jadon Bachtold headed in a pass from Joe Thompson.

The match saw six yellow cards with the Banana Slugs earning four of them.

Up next, Whitman faces Carroll College on Saturday at 4:00 pm on the Whitworth Soccer Field. The Whitworth Puma Classic concludes on Sunday at 1:00 pm as Whitworth takes on UC Santa Cruz.
