ORANGE, Calif. – Thanks to a huge penalty kick save, the visiting Whitworth men's soccer team held on to beat Chapman 2-1 in its season-opener Friday night. The Pirates took the win despite getting outshot 13-6.
The Whitworth defense held Chapman scoreless in the first half.
Chapman's Aidan Wall tied the game at 1-1 on a free kick just outside the penalty area in the 67th minute.
With time running out in regulation, DeVonte Gorman found space and scored the Bucs' go-ahead goal with four minutes remaining in the second half. It was Gorman's first goal as a Pirate.
Chapman finished off the match with a few opportunities but was unable to capitalize. Tobi Howe was awarded a penalty kick in the final minute, but Pirate goalkeeper Jesus Nunez made a spectacular save while diving to his right to finish off the match.
Nunez recorded five saves on the match.
The Pirates continue their first road trip of the year as they take on Redlands on Sunday, September 1st.
