McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Linfield Wildcats held off a furious comeback attempt from the Whitworth Pirates to pick up a 2-0 victory in Sunday afternoon's Northwest Conference men's soccer contest.
The shutout was the Wildcats' (3-5-2, 1-3-2) first of the year. The Pirates (4-6-2, 3-2-1 NWC) were held scoreless for the second straight match.
Whitworth led in almost every offensive category in the first half, but left it down 1-0. The Pirates took more shots (7-4), shots on goal (4-2), and corner kicks (3-2) than the Wildcats, but were unable to convert those opportunities into goals.
Linfield scored the only goal of the half in its closing minutes. Jesus Nunez punched out a throw-in, but it deflected to Dayton Farrow, who buried his second goal of the year to put the Wildcats up 1-0.
Malachi Stalberg added Linfield's second goal in the 67th minute. Assisted by Isaias Flores, Stalberg put the match out of reach for the Bucs with his first goal of the season.
After Stalberg's goal, Whitworth attempted a furious comeback. The Bucs put 7 shots on goal in the second half and took 13 shots total. Chase Reidt led the charge for Whitworth with two shots on goal during the half. Cameron Perron made 7 saves during the half to hang on to the shutout.
