SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth senior Derrick Phelps is a 2019 Division III PING All-Region honoree, one more honor to conclude his one season with the Pirate men's golf team.
Phelps previously was named as the NWC Player of the Year and Whitworth's Male Senior Athlete of the Year.
Phelps made a huge impact in his only season at Whitworth, finishing among the top three players at each of the three NWC championship circuit events. He was second at the NWC Fall Classic last October, third at the NWC Spring Classic in mid-April and runner-up at the NWC Tournament last weekend in Walla Walla by a single stroke. He posted a scoring average of 72.9 in 2018-19.
Phelps (Zillah, Wash.), who played two years with the Community Colleges of Spokane for Whitworth head coach Scott Kramer, spent one year at Saint Martin's University in Lacey before transferring to reunite with Kramer.
Phelps was the medalist in his first tournament as a Pirate, the Collegiate Invitational hosted by Pacific Lutheran in September. He added another medalist finish at the NWC North event on April 6-7.
