WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Whitworth Pirates rallied on Sunday at Wine Valley Golf Course, but it was not quite enough to save a conference title at the 2019 Northwest Conference men's golf tournament.
The league-leaders in the standings coming into the tournament, Whitworth stumbled to sixth place after Saturday's first round. The Bucs rallied into third place on Sunday, but it was not enough to prevent tournament champion Willamette from claiming the NWC championship.
Derrick Phelps shot 77-71 – 148 to finish as the tournament runner-up, one stroke behind Joshua Lackey of George fox (80-67 – 147).
The scores on Sunday were reflective of the calmer conditions at Wine Valley, after gusty and windy conditions on Saturday.
Whitworth came into the weekend with 16 points in the standings, while Willamette and Pacific Lutheran had 13 points apiece. Willamette's victory this weekend was worth 16 points and the Pirates' third place finish was worth only 12, meaning the Bearcats finish the year with 29 points in the standings the Bucs net 28 points.
Willamette will get the NWC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament next month in Kentucky.
The final team scores this weekend were: Willamette 309-289 – 598, George Fox 319-288 – 607, Whitworth 325-292 – 617, Pacific Lutheran 322-296 – 618, Puget Sound 323-298 - 621, Linfield 318-310 – 628, Pacific (Ore.) 350-321 – 671, Lewis & Clark 351-325 – 676, Whitman 352-331 – 683.
