SPOKANE, Wash. – The American Baseball Coaches Association and D3baseball.com have each named Whitworth starting pitcher Hugh Smith to their respective 2018 All-West Region teams.
Smith, the 2018 Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Year, is a second team selection on both the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-West Region squad as well as the D3baseball.com All-West Region team.
Smith, a junior from Sammamish, Wash., became the first Pirate player to earn NWC Pitcher of the Year recognition, although pitcher Eddie Eugenio was the co-NWC Player of the Year in 1990 before there was a separate award for a pitcher.
Smith finished 6-1 with a 1.58 earned run average in 2018. He started nine games and had two no-decisions. He had 67 strikeouts in 62.2 innings, an average of 9.62 strikeouts per nine innings. Smith tossed a complete-game shutout in a 7-0 win at Pacific (Ore.) on April 14.
Over the course of his three years at Whitworth, Smith is 15-6 with a 3.13 ERA in 187 innings of work.
Smith is expected to be an early choice in the upcoming Major League baseball draft June 4th through 6th.
