WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Brendan Henry threw a complete game to lift Whitman to a 2-1 win over Whitworth in a Northwest Conference baseball game on Tuesday afternoon at Borleske Stadium.
The Blues improved to 13-15 overall and 8-7 in the NWC while the Pirates dropped to 12-14, 7-8. The game was the finale of a three-game series that was originally scheduled for the final weekend of February, but was postponed by snow accumulation on Whitworth's Merkel Field. The Pirates batted as the home team in this game.
Lucas Thrun's two-run double in the sixth inning provided all the offense that Henry would need. Whitman's win on Tuesday completed a three-game sweep of the NWC series.
Tyler Bailey's two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning drove in Nicholas Nerud with the Pirates' only run. But Henry got Liam Fitzpatrick to ground out, ending the threat. Henry retired Whitworth in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Henry scattered seven hits to improve to 3-1 this season. He struck out three Pirates and walked none.
Austin Rice made his first career start for Whitworth and the freshman performed well. Rice allowed two runs on five hits over six innings of work, but fell to 0-2 this season. Bradley Tiefenthaler and Brett Thomas finished up on the mound for the Bucs.
Bailey went 2-4 in the game and was the only Pirate player with more than one hit.
Whitworth will head to Portland to take on Lewis & Clark College in a three-game NWC series on Friday and Saturday.
