MOSCOW, Idaho – Both the Whitworth men's and women's cross country teams opened their seasons by finishing seventh at the Clash of the Inland Northwest on Friday evening.
The Pirates competed with many of the region's top cross country teams at the season-opening meet, including one other Division III squad: Whitman College. The Blues narrowly beat out the Bucs, with both the men's and women's teams placing one spot in front of the Pirates.
Whitworth's women were just eight combined places behind Whitman's at the meet. Krystal Roberts was the top-performer in the four-kilometer run. The sophomore raced to 19th place with a personal record 15:15.30 time, the best of all Division III runners.
Ellie Shoop crossed the line just behind Roberts with a time of 15:30.10, good enough for 26th overall and fourth among Division III runners. Fellow freshman Emma Bates was the fifth Division III finisher and placed 33rd overall.
On the men's side, William Glick was the Pirates' top finisher with a 18:38.50 mark in the six-kilometer race. The sophomore's performance placed him 29th overall and third among Division III runners.
Aidan Smith was the next Pirate to finish, placing 41st with a time of 19:05.30. Jacob Clark followed the freshman to the line with a time of 19:32.50. Clark's performance was good enough for 47th place overall.
Next up, the Bucs have a week off from competition before they travel to the Pacific Lutheran Invitational on September 15th.
