SALEM, Ore. – Kayla Leland's first place finish in the Charles Bowles Invitational paced Whitworth women's cross country on their way to a fifth place team finish Saturday morning.
Whitworth's team finish outpaced all seven of the other Northwest Conference teams in the field, narrowly defeating sixth-place Linfield. Willamette (10th) and Whitman (12th) were third and fourth respectively amongst NWC schools.
Leland won the invitational with a time of 17:37.1, 6.5 seconds ahead of the second place runner, Kaila Gibson of Portland State.
In addition to Leland, Bailey Scott and Thais Pedro Trujillo both took home top-40 finishes. Scott's 18:21.4 time earned her a 21st place finish, and Pedro-Trujillo followed with 18:44.4 to finish 35th. Krystal Roberts and Marissa Mount rounded out the Pirate scorers, finishing 43rd and 63rd.
The Whitworth men finished the Bowles Invitational in 11th place out of the 17 teams. Grant Bingham and Daniel Harper led the men with finishes of 27th and 33rd place respectively. Bingham finished the 8-kilometer race in 26:00.5 with Harper right behind him at 26:07.0
The men's team finished fourth out of the eight Northwest Conference teams participating in the meet. Pacific Lutheran, Willamette, and Lewis & Clark all outpaced the Pirates.
Next up, the Pirates travel to Estacada, Ore. to compete in the Lewis & Clark Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 14.
