SEATTLE, Wash. – Kayla Leland was the seventh runner across the finish line in the Women's Open Run of the Sundodger Invitational, the top finisher of all Pirate runners on Saturday morning.
The Whitworth women finished in 6th place out of 20 teams, while the men took home 12th place in a 19-team race. The meet featured several of Whitworth's Northwest Conference foes, as well as various Division II and III competitors. The race was also the Pirates' first 6k women's race and 8k men's race of the young season.
Côme Nzibarega was the top men's finisher in 40th place. He was closely followed in 58th by Grant Bingham and 65th by Daniel Harper. As a team, the Whitworth men finished behind just one Northwest Conference school, Lewis & Clark, and in front of five NWC teams.
The women's team placed four runners in the top 40. Leland, Bailey Scott (31st), Thais Pedro-Trujillo (38th), and Krystal Roberts (39th) led the way in Whitworth's 6th place result. As a group, the Pirates finished in front of all six Northwest Conference schools they competed with.
The next meet for the Pirates will be the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational in Salem, Oregon. The meet takes place on Saturday, Sept. 30 and begins at 9:30 a.m. The Bowles Invite will be the first opportunity for the Whitworth men to compete with the Willamette team they hope to unseat from the top of the Northwest Conference.
