INDEPENDENCE, Ore. – The Whitworth men's cross country team finished ninth and the women's team came in 10th at the 2012 NCAA West Region Championships, held at the Oak Knoll Golf Course on Saturday.
Freshman Chris MacMurray led the Pirates, finishing the 8k race in 25:43.76, which put him in 35th place. Sophomore Taylor Steele crossed the line with a time of 25:50.95, while sophomore Matt Edwards finished with a time of 26:03.55. Junior Andrew Ryder also finished in the top 50 for the Bucs, coming in with a time of 26:12.10.
In the women's 6k race, sophomore Christina Anderson finished 27th to lead the Bucs with a time of 22:25.71. Freshman Kellyn Roiko crossed the line with a time of 22:43.29, while senior Celeste Northcott finished in 22:54.57. Junior Elisabeth Spencer ran the 6k in 23:05.98.
Claremon-Mudd Scripps took first place in both the men's and women's races with team scores of 34 and 40, respectively. Two Claremont-Mudd-Scripps runners, Zorg Loustalet and Bennett Naden, finished first and second for the men, while La Verne Lenore Moreno was the first of the ladies to cross the finish line.
On the men's side, Willamette led the Northwest Conference competitors, coming in fourth place. Willamette's Parker Bennett finished sixth to lead the NWC runners. For the women, Lewis & Clark finished second in the team standings with Emily Thomas finishing eighth.
