Pirates Set To Race At West Region Championships

The Whitworth men's and women's cross country teams are set to run at the Division III West Region Cross Country Championships, hosted by Willamette University, on Saturday, November 10th.

2012 Meet Information: The 2012 West Region Championships takes place at the Oak Knoll Golf Course in Independence, Ore.

The men's 8k race will begin at 11:00 am and the women's 6k race will start at noon. A course map can be found here.

2012 NWC Championship Recap: The Pirates raced in the Northwest Conference Cross Country Championships on October 27th. The women's team took third place overall, while the men's team finished fourth.

Junior Elisabeth Spencer finished in fifth place to lead the women's team. Freshman Kellyn Roiko finished with a time of 23:51 for 16th place and sophomore Christina Anderson ran a 23:57 6k race to finish in 17th place.

Sophomore Taylor Steele led the men, finishing the 8k race with a time of 26:40, which put him in 11th place. Junior Matt Edwards also finished in the top 20, crossing the line with a time of 27:05. Freshman Chris MacMurray finished 23rd with a time of 27:11 for the Bucs.

Competition: Whitworth will be racing against teams from the Northwest Conference, Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and a couple of schools that are independent.

USTFCCCA Rankings: In final regular season USTFCCCA regional rankings, the men's team is ranked eighth and the women are ranked fifth in the West Region.

On the men's side, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps maintained its first place ranking, while Willamette jumped one spot to No. 2 after the Bearcats took first place at the NWC Championships. Pomona-Pitzer fell to No. 3. Lewis & Clark jumped five spots to a fourth place ranking, while Puget Sound fell one to number five. La Verne and Colorado College flipped spots, coming in sixth and seventh, respectively. Whitworth, UC Santa Cruz and George Fox round out the top ten.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps also holds the number one spot on the women's side. Lewis & Clark and Willamette remained second and third, respectively. Occidental moved up one spot to number four, while Whitworth jumped two spots to number five. Linfield remained in sixth, while Whitman moved up two spots to number seven. Pomona-Pitzer fell four spots to eighth place. Colorado College and UC Santa Cruz round out the top ten.

2011 West Region Championships: At last year's West Region Championships, the men's team finished sixth overall while the women's team finished 11th overall. Colorado College and Occidental College shared first place in the men's race, and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps took first on the women's side.

Individually, the men had two runners in the top 20, as Aaron Jenkins and Trevor Berrian finished 14th and 17th, respectively. Taylor Steele and Trent Dudley also competed for the Pirates, finishing the race with times of 26:48.78 and 27:20.12, respectively.

For the women, senior Joy Shufeldt was the only runner to finish in the top 10, coming in fifth with a time of 21:48.95.  Elisabeth Spencer and Christina Anderson finished with times of 23:21.20 and 24:02.15, respectively.

Past West Region Performances: Both teams have been West Region Champions within the past five years. In 2009, the women's team took first place, while the men were champions in 2008.

At the 2010 West Region Championships, the men finished in third place, while the women's team finished second. When the women earned the championship in 2009, the men's team finished 4th. When the men took first in 2008, the women's team finished fourth.
