LEWISTON, Idaho – The men's and women's cross country teams competed against teams from all over the Inland Northwest at the Inland Empire Championships hosted by Lewis-Clark State College at the Orchards cross country course in Lewiston on Saturday.
The women began the day with a 5000 meter 5k race that featured 107 runners. Sophomore Christina Anderson was the first of the Pirates to cross the finish line, coming in 40th with a time of 19:34. Junior Elisabeth Spencer crossed a second behind Anderson, coming in 41st with a time of 19:35. Freshman Kellyn Roiko and senior Celeste Northcott also finished under the 20:00 mark for Whitworth, crossing the line at 19:43 and 19:57, respectively.
The women's team finished seventh overall out of ten teams. Gonzaga took first place overall, while Washington State's Caroline Austin was the first to cross the finish line, finishing the 5k in 17:43.
The men's 8000 meter 8k race featured 93 runners and followed the women's race. Freshman Colton Berry led the Pirates, finishing with a time of 26:46 for 50th place. Freshman Chris MacMurray and junior Andrew Ryder were split seconds apart to take 55th and 56th places, respectively. Junior Matt Edwards ran a 27:13 to take 60th place.
The men's team finished eighth out of nine teams. Washington State took first place on the men's side. Paul Limpf, running as an individual, crossed the line first overall with a time of 24:28, and Washington State's Drew Jordan finished second with a time of 24:35.
Whitworth returns to action at 10:00 a.m. on October 27th at the Northwest Conference Championships, hosted by Pacific (Ore.) at the Sunset Grove golf course.
