Cross Country To Compete In Inland Empire Classic

The Whitworth men's and women's cross country teams return to action this weekend at the Inland Empire Classic Cross Country Challenge on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in Lewiston, Idaho.

Inland Empire Classic: The 2012 Inland Empire Classic will be raced at the Lewiston Orchards. 

The men and women will run on the same course, with the men's race having minor adjustments to reach correct length. The course map can be found here.  The race is on a temporary course for this year, while the future course is under development. Directions to Saturday's race can be found here.

Approximately 120 women will kick off the day with a 5000 meter 5k race at 10:30 a.m. The 8000 meter men's 8k race will feature approximately 100 runners and will follow the women's race, starting at 11:15 a.m.

After running against four Northwest Conference teams in its last meet, Whitworth will be the lone NWC competitor at the Inland meet. The Inland Empire Classic will feature entrants from clubs, colleges and junior colleges.

The Pirates: Whitworth had last weekend off from competition after running at three consecutive meets.  In their last meet, the Bucs competed at the 38th Annual Charles Bowles Invitational on September 29th.

The men's team finished the 8k Cardinal run in eighth place out of 19 teams, with 221 points.  The women's team took ninth out of 20 teams with 271 points in the 5k Cardinal race.

Freshman Colton Berry was the first of the Pirate men to cross the finish line, coming in 30th with a time of 26:07.28. Senior Tim Hill finished next with a time of 26:17.79, while junior Matt Edwards crossed the line with at time of 26:19.41.

Sophomore Christina Anderson and junior Elisabeth Spencer finished 21st and 22nd, respectively for the women.  Anderson had a time of 18:49.10, while Spencer recorded an 18:50.54.  Freshman Kellyn Roiko and senior Celeste Northcott also finished the 5k under 20:00, coming in with a time of 19:13.01 and 19:41.30, respectively.

Rankings: Both team stayed in the same rankings in the latest USTFCCCA Regional rankings poll that was released Tuesday.

The Whitworth men's cross country team remains fifth in the West Region in the latest regional poll.  The Pirates are the third of the NWC teams in the regional ranking and come in behind Willamette and Puget Sound, who are third and fourth, respectively. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is ranked first in the West Region.

The women's team remains sixth in the West Region, and is the fourth of the NWC teams. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps remains the top-ranked team of the West Region, while NWC competition Lewis & Clark comes in second. Willamette maintained third place this week while Linfield held on to fourth place.

Next Up: The teams will have weekend off from competition to rest up for the Northwest Conference Championships. Hosted by Pacific (Ore.), the teams will race at Sunset Grove on Saturday, October 27th, starting at 10 a.m.
