The Whitworth cross country teams return to action this Saturday at the 20th Annual Sundodger Cross Country Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington.
The women's 6000m race will begin at 9:00 am while the men's 8000m race starts at 9:40 am. Both races will start and finish at Lincoln Park in Seattle and the course is a mixture of grass, dirt, light gravel and bark chips.
Last year, the women's team finished eighth overall. Sophomore Christina Anderson finished 23rd and was the first Pirate to cross the finish line. Senior Joy Shufeldt crossed the line two places behind Anderson, finishing in 25th place.
The men's team won the open race in 2010, and finished eighth overall in 2011. Junior Andrew Ryder, sophomore Taylor Steele and senior Tim Hill return to the open race after crossing the finish line 76th, 77th and 78th, respectively, last season.
The Pirates will race against familiar competition, as the Sundodger Invitational typically attracts most of the Northwest Conference cross country teams. The open race has included Division II, NAIA and regional schools in the past, as well as Canadian institutions.
After the Sundodger Invitational, Whitworth will return to Spokane Valley for the Runner's Soul Erik Anderson Invite on September 22.
