OSHKOSH, Wis. -- Whitworth's Joy Shufeldt finished in 76th place individually in the women's race at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, while Aaron Jenkins placed 217th in the men's competition.
Shufeldt (Jr., Portland, Ore.) went into the race with a goal of earning the second All-America honor of her career, which would have meant a finish among the top 35 runners. She was in 84th place after the first mile, but then moved up to 43rd place at the second mile marker. Shufeldt was still within reach of her goal, sitting in 51st place in a crowded field at the three-mile mark. She fell back to 76th place at the end, finishing the six kilometer course with a time of 22:08.40.
It was Shufeldt's third time racing at the NCAA Championships.
Chiara Del Piccolo of Williams College won the women's race with a time of 20:52.08. Washington University of St. Louis won the team championship, edging out Middlebury 70-111.
Jenkins (Sr., Pocatello, Idaho) was racing at the NCAA Championships for the fourth time in his career. He was among the top 100 racers after the first mile, sitting in 93rd place. By the third mile he had dropped back to 184th place. His final time was 26:02.97 on the eight kilometer course, finishing in 217th position.
Ben Sathre of St. Thomas (Minn.) won the men's race in 23:44.27. North Central (Ill.) won the men's championship for the 14th time in school history. the Cardinals edged Haverford 110-172.
