The Whitworth University volleyball team travels to Oregon this weekend for a pair of Northwest Conference matches against George Fox and Pacific (Ore.).
The Pirates will face George Fox at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27th in Newberg, Ore. Live stats and video will be available for that match. Whitworth then travels to Forest Grove to take on Pacific (Ore.) at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 28th. Live stats and video are also available for that match.
The Pirates: Whitworth opened Northwest Conference play last weekend hosting Willamette and Lewis & Clark. Whitworth went up 2-0 in both matches before the visitors came back to force a fifth set. On Friday, the Pirates were able to rally in the fifth set and defeat Willamette. On Saturday, Lewis & Clark pulled off the comeback by taking the fifth set victory. Whitworth enters this weekend with an overall record of 7-7 and the Pirates are 1-1 in NWC action.
Offensively, Jalana White leads the team with 200 kills (3.70 k/set), and 15 service aces this season. Kristine Kardell has 147 kills (2.72 k/set) with a .253 hitting percentage. Maddye Dinsmore has 544 assists (10.07 ast./set) and is tied with White for a team-high 15 service aces this season. Whitney Santos' 12 service aces are third on the team, while Nicole Leonard is third on the team with 135 kills (2.50 d/set) for the Pirates.
On defense, Santos leads the team with 274 digs (5.59 d/set). Kardell leads the team with 42 blocks, seven of which are solo blocks. White is fourth on the team with 132 digs (2.44 d/set) and is the second leading blocker, with six of her 23 blocks this season being solo blocks. Leonard is second on the team for her 177 digs (3.28 d/set) and is tied with Briauna Stadeli for third on the team with 20 blocks. Dinsmore is third on the team with 146 digs (2.70 d/set).
National Leaders: Three Pirates rank nationally in four categories. Sophomore Maddye Dinsmore ranks 21st among NCAA Division III players for her 10.07 assists per set. Senior Whitney Santos ranks 24th among DIII players for her 5.65 digs per set. Senior Jalana White is ranked in two categories, holding the 51st ranking for her 3.70 kills per set and the 54th ranking for her 4.25 points per set.
The Opponents: George Fox enters the weekend with a 5-5 overall record, The Bruins are 0-2 in Northwest Conference play after falling to Pacific (Ore.) and Puget Sound last week. George Fox is led offensively by Erin Campbell whose 109 kills average out to 3.52 kills/set with a .215 hitting percentage. Defensively, Chelsea Wilson's 212 digs (5.89 d/set) lead the Bruins. Wilson has also served up 19 aces this season. Tiffany Burk and Emily Rawlings each have 19 blocks on the season for George Fox.
Last season, Whitworth split its series with George Fox, losing 3-0 in Newberg and winning 3-0 in Whitworth Fieldhouse.
Pacific (Ore.) brings a 2-7 overall record into this weekend's game. The Boxers are 1-1 in conference play after defeating George Fox and falling to Puget Sound. The Boxers are led on offense by Marie Rewick, who has 140 kills (4.12 k/set) and Becky Sheller on defense, who has 176 digs and averages 5.18 digs/set for the Boxers. Jamie Steach leads the Boxers with 11 service aces, while Mariah McHolland leads Pacific (Ore.) with 19 blocks, three of which are solo blocks.
Last season the Pirates dropped both matches against Pacific (Ore.), falling 3-2 both at home and in Forest Grove.
NWC Leaders: Whitworth has three players that rank first among Northwest Conference players in three categories and two additional players that rank in the top five. Overall, Whitworth has five players that rank in the top five in nine categories.
Jalana White (200), Kristine Kardell (147) and Nicole Leonard (135) hold the top three of the top four spots in number of kills this season. White is also second in kills per set (3.70), while Kardell is fifth blocks per set (0.78) and hitting percentage (.253). Whitney Santos ranks first for her 274 digs and third for her 5.59 digs per set average. Maddye Dinsmore's 10.07 assists per set lead the conference.
George Fox has three players that rank in the top five in Northwest Conference statistical categories. Chelsea Wilson ranks second among conference players for her 5.89 digs per set, third for her 0.53 service aces per set and fourth for her 212 digs this season. Tiffany Burk's .302 hitting percentage ranks second among conference players. Erin Campbell ranks fourth for her 3.52 kills per set.
Pacific (Ore.)'s Marie Rewick leads conference players with 4.12 kills per set and is third for her 140 kills this season. Becky Sheller's 5.18 digs per set rank fifth among conference players.
The Head Coach: Kati Bodecker enters her first season as head coach of the Pirates. Bodecker comes to Whitworth after six successful seasons as the head volleyball coach at Priest River Lamanna. During her time at the helm, the Spartans posted five winning seasons and five state tournament appearances and she was named league Coach of the Year in 2007 and Idaho Co-Coach of the Year in 2012. A four-year starter at the University of Idaho, Bodecker ranks eighth in kills per set and tied for ninth in single season kills on the all-time Vandals leader list.
