Pirates Cruise To Three Set Victory Over Bruins

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth volleyball team defeated George Fox in three straight sets (27-25, 25-15, 25-15) to close out the home portion of the 2012 season. The Pirates improve to 9-12 overall, 5-9 in Northwest Conference action while the Bruins fall to 9-12 on the season, 7-7 in conference play.

The first set was a game of runs, as the Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead on kills by junior Kristine Kardell and freshman Nicole Leonard. The Bruins responded, going on a 3-0 run to tie the game on a kill from Tiffany Burk.  Whitworth again went ahead, this time 14-9, and again George Fox came back to tie the game 14-14, this time on a kill from Erin Campbell.  The Bucs again went ahead, 23-19, before the Bruins made yet another run to tie the score 24-24 on another kill by Campbell. The Pirates took advantage of a George Fox service error to pull ahead 26-25 and freshman Maddye Dinsmore served up an ace to give the Bucs the first set victory.

The teams kept the second set close early, as they tied the score four times and traded leads twice. Back-to-back Bruin attack errors gave Whitworth a 7-5 lead, and Maddye Dinsmore increased it with back-to-back kills.  The Pirates continued to build a lead and the Bucs saw runs that included kills from junior Jalana White, Kardell, Dinsmore and junior Abi Hedlund. White came up with a kill to give the Pirates a 24-15 lead and the Bruins ended the set with an attack error.

An early 1-1 tie was the closest that the Bruins got in the third set as the Pirates took control from the get-go.  Kristine Kardell and Abi Hedlund each had a kill while Nicole Leonard served up an ace as the Bucs went on a 6-0 run that proved to be all the distance Whitworth needed.  After going up 24-15 on a kill from freshman Jacqueline Brennan, Whitworth won the game on a George Fox ball handling error.

Whitworth rebounded from hitting -.012 in the first set to hitting .323 for the second set.  The Bucs finished the night with a hitting percentage of .132. The Pirates had at least one ace in every set and finished the night with six aces total. Whitworth also had three team blocks while George Fox had two team blocks.

"We served very aggressively today and it kept George Fox on their heels and they never really recovered," Whitworth head coach Steve Rupe said. "Tonight was an entire team effort from start to finish."

Jalana White had a game-high 11 kills, six digs, a block and an ace while hitting .226 on the night. Maddye Dinsmore had 28 assists, 18 digs and two aces. Kristine Kardell hit .312 on the night, finishing with eight kills and a block. Nicole Leonard had 18 digs, seven kills and an ace. Abi Hedlund and sophomore Katie Adams each had an ace for the Bucs.

"Jalana (White) was solid in her game," Rupe said. "Maddye (Dinsmore) had a very good night offensively and defensively with 18 digs."

Chelsea Wilson had a game-high 26 digs for the Bruins, while Erin Campbell had eight digs. Payton Shrum had 20 assists for George Fox.
