NEWBER, Ore. – The Whitworth volleyball team could not overcome George Fox's .314 hitting percentage and the Bruins defeated the Pirates 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 in the Wheeler Sports Complex Saturday evening. Whitworth falls to 5-8 overall, 1-5 in the Northwest Conference while George Fox improves to 6-7 overall, 4-2 in the NWC.
Whitworth opened the game with a kill by sophomore Tori LaBrie. Freshman Nicole Leonard had her first kill of the game to put the Pirates back in front after a Tiffany Burk kill tied the score. The teams traded points until they got to a 4-4 tie. From there, the Bruins put together a four point run that put some distance between the teams. Whitworth was unable to follow up with its own run and George Fox took the first set.
The Pirates took an early 2-0 lead in the second set on kills by LaBrie and junior Jalana White. However, the Bruins put together their own run and pulled ahead on a block by Cassie Irwin and Tiffany Burk. Whitworth tied the game again at 6-6, but a Cassie Irwin kill put George Fox back in front, where it stayed for the rest of the set.
Whitworth fought hard, tying the score ten times in the game, with five of those in the third set. Unfortunately, every time the Pirates tied the score, the Bruins came up with a kill to put them back in front. The third set stayed close until about the halfway point. A Jalana White kill made the score 12-11, but the Bucs followed it with a service error. George Fox took advantage of the error and built a lead that proved too much for Whitworth.
The Bucs' hitting percentage did improve from .035 in the game against Lewis & Clark last night to .143, but it was not enough to match up with George Fox. The Bruins also had four team blocks compared to Whitworth's one team block.
The Pirates were led by Jalana White who had 13 kills and nine digs. Nicole Leonard had eight kills and 12 digs, while Tori LaBrie had six kills. Freshman Maddye Dinsmore had 15 digs and junior Whitney Santos had 13 digs for Whitworth.
George Fox was led by Lucy Capron, who had 11 kills and 13 digs. Tiffany Burk finished the night with 10 kills and hit .429 for the Bruins.
Next up, Whitworth will host Pacific (Ore.) in the Whitworth Fieldhouse on October 5 at 7:00 pm PDT.
