Pirates Look For NWC Win Against Bearcats

Whitworth volleyball (4-6, 0-3) continues Northwest Conference play when the Pirates host the Willamette Bearcats at 7:00 pm Saturday in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates: Whitworth is still looking for its first NWC win of the season after losses at Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound and at home against Whitman.

On Wednesday, Whitworth fell in four sets to Whitman. The Pirates struggled offensively, hitting just .032 for the game. The Bucs had 42 attack errors on the night, and Whitman had 13 team blocks. Junior Jalana White led the team with 17 kills and 13 digs, while freshman Nicole Leonard had 11 kills and 27 digs.

Team Leaders: Nicole Leonard leads the team and is among the top five in the conference for the number of kills per set, averaging 3.27. Jalana White is second on the team and is also among the conference top five, averaging 3.22 kills per set. 

White and junior Briauna Stadeli also lead the team in blocks, averaging .57 and .58 blocks per set, respectively. Freshman Shawna Korshavn has stepped in at the setter position and is averaging 6.42 assists per game.

Scouting Willamette:  Willamette (2-7, 0-2) will travel to the Fieldhouse after playing at Whitman on Friday evening. The Bearcats are still looking for their first conference win, as they fell to Pacific (Ore.) and at Linfield in their first two NWC games.

The Bearcats are led by Carly Hargrave, whose .255 hitting percentage is one of the top five in the conference. Hargrave and Kristen Brehmer also lead Willamette with .76 and .60 blocks per set, respectively.  Madisyn Leenstra is averaging 3.14 kills per set while Emily Compton averages 8.50 assists per set for the Bearcats.

Whitworth faced Willamette twice in NWC play during the 2011 season and won 3-0 in both meetings.  

The Coach: Steve Rupe has a record of 207-143 during his 14 year tenure as the Pirates volleyball head coach. He has been named NWC Coach of the Year four times (2001, 2002, 2010 and 2011) and AVCA Coach of the Year once (2005). Rupe is the winningest coach in school history as well as the longest serving Pirate volleyball coach. During his tenure, Whitworth has won five NWC titles and has advanced to the NCAA Division III finals twice (2002, 2005).
