SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth volleyball team won the second set against Northwest Conference opponent Whitman College, but the Missionaries took three of the four sets to come away with the victory. Whitman defeated Whitworth 25-18, 19-25, 25-17, 25-20 on Wednesday evening in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
Whitworth dropped to 4-6 overall, 0-3 in the NWC. Whitman improved to 3-7, 1-2 in conference play.
The Pirates scored the first point of the night on a kill by junior Abi Hedlund, but it would be the only time that they would led in the first set. Whitworth would get the ball back on a Missionaries attack error and score three points before Whitman would again take over.
Whitworth came out better in the second set, falling behind only once, at 9-10. The Pirates regained the lead and used kills by junior Briauna Stadeli, freshman Nicole Leonard and junior Jalana White to ensure that the set ended in the Pirates' favor. The Bucs attacked better in the second set, with a hitting percentage of .163.
The Missionaries swung the momentum back into their favor for the third set, scoring the first three points. Whitworth would come back and tie the game at 10-10, but Whitman took the lead back on a kill by Courtney Brewer and the Pirates would not get close again.
With eight ties and four lead changes, the two teams kept the fourth set interesting. A wild rally ended with a Whitworth point scored by junior Whitney Santos that tied the game at 15 and got the crowd on its feet, but the Pirates were unable to use the momentum in their favor. The Missionaries went on to score five consecutive points before a kill by Nicole Leonard would get the Bucs back on the board. Whitworth would get as close as 19-20 before Whitman scored four points to ensure a victory.
Whitworth hit just .032 for the game and finished with 42 attack errors.
Jalana White led the Pirates with 17 kills and 13 digs, while Nicole Leonard had 11 kills and 27 digs. Briauna Stadeli and Abi Hedlund and sophomore Katie Adams each had an ace for the Pirates.
Olivia Nielson, Courtney Brewer and Jillian Davis each had 10 kills for Whitman. Hannah Linsenmayer had 28 digs and two aces for the Missionaries.
Whitworth returns to action Saturday, Sept. 22, hosting Willamette at 7:00 pm in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
