Whitworth looks for its first Northwest Conference win of the season as the Pirates host the Whitman Missionaries at 6:00 pm Wednesday in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates: Whitworth (4-5, 0-2) opened the NWC portion of its season with losses at Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound over the weekend.
On Friday, Whitworth fell in four sets to PLU. The Pirates struggled offensively in the first two sets, hitting just .083 and .100, but junior Jalana White led the Pirates in the third set. The Bucs had a hitting percentage of .344 for the set and White had a set-high seven kills.
The Pirates fell in three sets on Saturday to UPS. Whitworth again struggled offensively, with a hitting percentage of .104 for the game. Freshman Nicole Leonard led the team with 13 kills and 18 digs while junior Abi Hedlund and sophomore Katie Adams each had an ace in the third set.
Nicole Leonard leads the team and is among the top five in the conference for the number of kills per set, averaging 3.33. Jalana White is second on the team, averaging 3.09 kills per set.
White and junior Briauna Stadeli also lead the team in blocks, averaging .64 and .62 blocks per set, respectively. Freshman Shawna Korshavn has stepped in at the setter position and is averaging 5.85 assists per game.
Scouting Whitman: Whitman (2-7, 0-2) comes into Wednesday's game after losing to Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran over the weekend.
The Missionaries are led by Jillian Davis, one of the leaders in the conference for her 3.86 kills per set. Davis is also one of the conference leaders in service aces per set, averaging 0.48. Hannah Linsenmayer joins Davis on the service aces leader list, averaging 0.44 per set.
Olivia Nielson and Courtney Brewer lead the Missionaries and are among the conference leaders in blocks. Nielson averages 1.36 blocks per set while Brewer averages 1.21. Rachel Cline is averaging 7 assists per game for Whitman.
Whitworth faced Whitman twice in NWC play and twice in the Colorado College Classic during the 2011 season and emerged victorious in all four meetings. The Pirates have already defeated the Missionaries this season with a 3-1 win in the Whit Classic earlier this month.
The Coach: Steve Rupe has a record of 207-142 during his 14 year tenure as the Pirates volleyball head coach. He has been named NWC Coach of the Year four times (2001, 2002, 2010 and 2011) and AVCA Coach of the Year once (2005). Rupe is the winningest coach in school history as well as the longest serving Pirate volleyball coach. During his tenure, Whitworth has won five NWC titles and has advanced to the NCAA Division III finals twice (2002, 2005).
