TACOMA, Wash. – Despite 13 kills, 18 digs and by freshman Nicole Leonard, No. 11 Puget Sound defeated the Whitworth volleyball team 25-19, 25-23, 25-18 in Northwest Conference action on Saturday evening in Tacoma.
Whitworth (4-5, 0-2) dropped its second NWC game in as many nights while Puget Sound (7-2, 2-0) won its second conference game in two days.
Puget Sound started the night with four straight points before an attack error got Whitworth on the board. The Pirates used back to back kills by junior Jalana White and freshman Nicole Leonard to keep the score close, but Whitworth was unable to take a lead and Puget Sound took the first set 25-19.
The Pirates started the second set with an ace from sophomore Katie Adams. The teams would trade points with 17 ties and seven lead changes during the course of the set. Freshman Shawna Korshavn set up Jalana White for a kill that gave Whitworth its largest lead of the night, 13-11, but Puget Sound came back to tie the set. Back to back kills by Jordan Bird tied the game at 23 and then gave the Loggers a 24-23 lead. An attack error by Nicole Leonard gave Puget Sound the set point.
Puget Sound took a 1-0 lead in the third set and continued to build on it. Though Whitworth tied the score three times, once on a Logger error and twice on kills by Jalana White, the Pirates were never able to take pull ahead and the Loggers took the set 25-18.
Puget Sound was led by Jackie Harvey with 15 kills, and Jenni Brehove with 39 assists.
