Whitworth Wins Two To Take Whit Classic Title

SPOKANE, Wash. – Junior Jalana White and freshman Nicole Leonard led the Whitworth volleyball team to two victories on Saturday to take the Whit Classic title in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Whitworth (4-3) defeated the Whittier 25-23, 25-18, 29-27. The Pirates limited the Poets to a -.043 hitting percentage in the second set while they hit .208. Whittier jumped out to an early lead in the first set before Whitworth tied it at 14-14 and then took the lead.  The set had six tied scores, but Whitworth was able to pull ahead on a kill by White and a ball handling error on Whittier.  Whitworth carried the momentum over into the second set. The third set had 12 ties and six lead changes, but the Pirates clinched the game on a kill by Leonard and an error on the Poets.

Whitworth defeated Whitman 25-20, 18-25, 26-24, 25-21. The Bucs had a strong first game, but came out struggling in the second set.  The defense struggled, and the Pirates had three errors in a row to end the set.  Whitworth came back in the third and four set, using the Missionaries' -.022 hitting percentage for the third set as motivation to finish strong in the fourth set.

White finished the night with 24 kills, 26 digs and two aces while Leonard recorded 26 kills and 33 digs. Junior Abi Hedlund finished the night with a team-high two aces. Freshman Shawna Korshavn finished the night with 73 assists and 24 digs. Korshavn got her second and third career starts in the games today as setter while freshman Izze Ginley got her first and second career starts in the libero position.

"Two of our starters were out," Whitworth head coach Steve Rupe said. "I'm pretty proud of the way our freshmen stepped in to fill those role."

Whitworth won the tournament on a tie-breaker and Nicole Leonard was named the tournament MVP.

Next up, the Pirates take on Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma on September 14 at 7:00 pm PDT.
