SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth volleyball team defeated Walla Walla in three sets to win the opening game of the Whit Classic on Thursday evening in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
A trio of juniors led Whitworth (2-2) to their 25-8, 25-11, 25-3 victory over Walla Walla (0-5).
Abi Hedlund finished the night with a team-high four aces. Briauna Stadeli led the Pirates with 10 kills and only one error for a hitting percentage of .600, while Jalana White had nine kills and hit .364.
The Pirates jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first set and never looked back. Whitworth served five consecutive points on two separate occasions during the set and limited Walla Walla to a hitting percentage of -.345.
The Wolves came back in the second set to tie up the score three times early, but the Pirates again took control on consecutive serving points to win the set.
Whitworth allowed just three points in the third set before serving 21 consecutive points to win the match. The Pirates hit .571 in the third set and finished with an overall hitting percentage of .386.
Whitworth returns to action in tomorrow's nightcap. The Pirates will face Luther at 7:00 pm in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
