SPOKANE, Wash. – Visiting Whitman College rallied after falling behind in doubles to earn a 6-3 win over Whitworth University in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match on Saturday at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The 32nd ranked Blues improved to 9-8 overall and 7-1 in the NWC while the Pirates fell to 7-10, 4-4. Whitworth had already clinched a spot in the upcoming NWC tournament.
Jennifer Adams and Katie Lacayo pulled out a 9-7 win over Hanna Greenberg and Lorin DeMuth to give the Bucs a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Erica Lee and Emma Jo Wiley topped Mary Hill and Lori Sheng 8-5 at #1 doubles for Whitworth's first point.
Marisa Kirk earned the Pirates only point in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over DeMuth at #6.
Hill defeated Lee at #1 singles for Whitman and Hannah Greenberg edged Adams 6-2, 6-3 at #3 singles to clinch the team win for the Blues.
Whitworth will open the NWC tournament next Saturday against whichever team is the top seed. That opponent is still to be determined.
