SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth rolled to a 7-2 win over visiting George Fox to earn a Northwest Conference women's tennis victory and end a two-match losing streak.
The Pirates improved to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in the NWC, earning an important win toward securing a spot in the four-team conference tournament. The Bruins fell to 3-5, 1-3.
Whitworth won two of the three doubles matches. Erica Lee and Emma Jo Wiley raced to an 8-2 win over Catrina Kwong and Kristen Mock at #1 doubles. Jennifer Adams and Katie Lacayo followed with an 8-5 win over Sophie Lawrence and Laney Search at #3 doubles. GFU pulled out a point when Jillian Studer and Lydia Pia edged Avery Liening and Marissa Kirk 9-8 (5) at #2 doubles.
Adams increased the Pirates' lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Pia at #3 singles. Kwong kept the Bruin's hopes alive by pulling out a 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Lee at #1 singles.
But that was it for George Fox as Whitworth closed with four straight wins. Wiley edged Studer 6-0, 6-7 (4), 6-2 at #2 singles for a 4-2 advantage. Liening then clinched the Pirates' team victory with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Lawrence at #4 singles.
Lacayo defeated Search 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (10-5) at #5 and Kirk rolled Emily Brink 6-2, 6-0 at #6 for the final point.
Whitworth will play a Northwest Conference counter at PLU next Saturday before taking on Bellevue CC in an exhibition match on Sunday.
