FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Visiting Whitworth University earned its second straight Northwest Conference road victory in women's tennis with a 7-2 decision at Pacific University on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates improved to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the NWC. The Boxers fell to 2-1, 0-1.
Whitworth rolled to a 3-0 lead thanks to a sweep in the doubles matches. Jennifer Adams and Katie Lacayo rolled to an 8-1 win over Taylor Smallwood and Megan Meatte at 3rd doubles. The other two contests were much closer. Erica Lee and Emma Jo Wiley edged Chantelle Baclay and Marissa Hayashi 8-6 at #1 doubles, while Avery Liening and Marissa Kirk got by Johanna Wilson and Sophia Nishimura by the same score at #3.
The Pirates quickly clinched the team victory thanks to wins at #1 and #3 singles. Adams shut out Hayashi 6-0, 6-0 at 3rd singles and Lee defeated Nishimura 6-1, 6-2 at #1 to give the Bucs an insurmountable 5-0 lead.
Pacific got on the board when Baclay topped Wiley 6-3, 6-3 at #2 singles.
Whitworth got the next two points with wins at fourth and sixth singles. Liening dominated Meatte 6-0, 6-1 at #4 while Lacayo rolled by Callie Oyama 6-0, 6-3.
The final point went to the Boxers on Wilson's 6-4, 6-4 victory over Emily Sandquist.
The Pirates will conclude their road trip through Oregon with a match at Linfield on Sunday morning.
