McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Visiting Whitworth pushed Northwest Conference regular season champion Linfield hard before falling 6-3 in a women's tennis match on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates end their season with an overall record of 7-10 and an NWC mark of 5-7. The 29th-ranked Wildcats improved to 14-3 overall and 10-1 in the NWC and will close out their regular season against Pacific (Ore.) on Sunday.
Whitworth got a win in one of the three doubles matches when Emma Jo Wiley and Erica Lee pulled out an 8-6 win over Elsa Harris and Sarah Sweet at #2. Bella Hoyos and Jennifer Adams fell 8-1 at #1 doubles, while Madeline Ball and Emily Sandquist lost by the same score at #3.
Linfield went ahead 4-1 in the team score by getting wins at #1 and #2 singles. Ella Riddle topped Hoyos 6-1, 6-1 at the top of the ladder and Harris beat Wiley 6-2, 6-0 at #2.
The Wildcats clinched the team win once Riley Clayeaux defeated Sandquist 6-2, 6-3 at #5 singles.
Whitworth earned individual victories at #3 and #6 singles. Adams edged Marisa Doveri 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) at #3, while Paige Rohrbach rallied past Sweet 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-2) at #6.
