PORTLAND, Ore. – Saryn Mooney led a very strong Whitworth showing at the ITA Fall Regional Tournament at Lewis & Clark College this weekend, reaching the championship final of both the singles and doubles fields.
Early on Monday Mooney and Taylor Pena, the #2 seeds in the doubles tournament, pulled out an 8-6 win over Whitman's Erin Bell and Katrina Allick in the doubles' semifinals. That win prevented an All-Whitman final.
Mooney and Pena took on top-seeded Courtney Lawless and Morgan Lawless of Whitman for an automatic bid to the ITA Division III Fall national tournament. Playing the best two out of three sets, the Missionary pair came away with a 6-1, 6-2 win.
It was no rest for the weary as Mooney had to gear up for a semifinal match against Lewis & Clark's Claudia Lew, the #6 seed in the singles draw. Mooney rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win to advance to the singles final.
Playing her 11th match in a 45-hour period, Mooney met top-seeded Courtney Lawless in the final. Lawless earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mooney to claim the individual crown.
Mooney and Pena led one of the best showings ever for the Whitworth women at the Fall ITA event. In addition to the appearances in the championship finals of both the singles and doubles tournaments, Pena reached the quarterfinals of the singles tournament while freshman Bella Hoyos reached the individual round of 16.
