PORTLAND, Ore. – Whitworth tennis players Saryn Mooney and Taylor Pena have reached the final day of the Fall ITA Regional Tournament, hosted by Lewis & Clark College.
Mooney, the #2 seed in the singles draw, has advanced to the semifinals. Pena, the #8 seed, still has a quarterfinal match to play on Monday.
Mooney won her first round match 6-3, 6-0 over Danielle Hunter of Pacific on Saturday, then followed with a 6-2, 6-2 second round win over Katie Krieger of Linfield later on Saturday.
On Sunday Mooney defeated Alyssa Emoto of George Fox 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 16. Then she fought past Katrina Allick of Whitman 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinal.
Mooney will play 6th-seeded Claudia Lew of Lewis & Clark in her semifinal match on Monday.
Pena opened her tournament on Saturday with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Puget Sound's Elizabeth Chao. Her second round win was a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Taylor Barnes of George Fox.
In Sunday's round-of-16 match, Pena outlasted Whitman's Allie Wallin (the #9 seed) 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5). Pena is slated to take on Linfield's 3rd-seeded Caroline Brigham, in a quarterfinal on Monday morning for a spot in the semifinals.
Bella Hoyos was a third Pirate to reach Sunday's rounds. She earned a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) opening round victory over Krista Rey of George Fox. Then she knocked off 13th-seeded Leah Newell of PLU 5-7, 7-6, 1-0 (10-8). She fell by a score of 6-3, 6-4 to L&C's Lew in the round of 16 on Sunday.
Whitworth had several other players win matches on the opening day of the tournament. Annabelle Burns beat Stephanie Baker 6-4, 6-2 in the first round before she lost to top-seeded Courtney Lawless (Whitman) in the second round. Elle Shaughnessey topped L&C's Justine Minette 6-4, 6-4 in a first round match, but lost to Jenna Gerdsen of UPS in the second round.
Most of the doubles tournament has not advanced past the first round. Mooney and Pena, the #2 seeded team, won their opening match 8-3 over a pair from PLU. Hoyos and Hannah Wallin earned an 8-4 win in the first round over a twosome from Puget Sound.
