
FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Visiting Whitworth ran away with a 7-2 victory over Pacific in Northwest Conference women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates improved to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the NWC with their third straight win. The Boxers dropped to 0-3, 0-3.
Whitworth took two of the three doubles matches to get out to an early lead. Jessi Steele and Annika Westre edged by Lillian Do and Francesca Battaglia 9-7 at #2 doubles. Morgan McDivitt and Megan Wingfield ran away with an 8-1 win at #3 doubles. The only Pacific point came when Rachel Mizuno and Synclaire Waldron topped Saryn Mooney and Taylor Peña at #1 doubles.
The Pirates would win five of the six singles matches and the only Pacific point came when Whitworth's Mooney had to retire in the third set of the #1 match against Waldron.
Steele cruised by Mizuno 6-1, 6-3 at #2 while Peña had little trouble while beating Battaglia 6-2, 6-1 at #3. Caylee Lamm also won easily in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) at #5 and Westre survived a tiebreak to sweep 7-6 (8-6) at #6.
Wingfield pulled out the only full three-set contest, defeating Do 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 at #4 singles.
Whitworth will finish its three-matches-in-three-days road swing on Sunday morning at defending NWC champion Linfield.
