Pirates Close NWC Slate with a Win at George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. – Whitworth closed out its 2012 Northwest Conference women's tennis schedule with an 8-1 win at George Fox on Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates improved to 13-5 overall and 9-3 in the NWC and will finish the regular season with a non-conference contest against Lewis-Clark State College on Wednesday.

Whitworth swept all three doubles matches against the Bruins (7-11 overall, 2-9 NWC), but it wasn't easy.  Jessi Steele and Saryn Mooney had to go to a tiebreak to defeat Alyssa Emoto and Cara Griffith 9-3, winning the tiebreak 7-3.

Alli Marshall and Erica Bosman beat Molly Beaumont and Shaina Inn 8-4 at #1 doubles, while Morgan McDivitt and Megan Wingfield earned an 8-3 win over Bethany Nguyen and Marissa Chau at #3.

GFU got its only point when Beaumont rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Marshall at #1 singles.

Prior to the conclusion of that match, Bosman had dispatched Emoto 6-0, 6-1 at #2 singles and Mooney had beaten Inn 6-4, 6-0 at #3 singles.

Steele pulled out a hard-fought 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 win over Griffith at #4 singles while Wingfield topped Chantelle Hadeed 6-2, 6-4 at #5 singles.

Janell Talbot pulled out a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 come-from-behind victory over Alissandra Wittrig at #6 singles.

Whitworth heads into next weekend's NWC tournament at Linfield as the #3 seed.
