Pirates Sweep First Three Matches in Florida
ORLANDO, Fla. – The Whitworth women have rolled to wins in their first three tennis matches in Florida this week.
The Pirates (10-2) defeated Birmingham Southern 8-1 on Tuesday, then beat Lawrence 8-1 and SUNY New Paltz 9-0 on Wednesday.
Whitworth swept the doubles on the way to Tuesday's win over the Panthers. Saryn Mooney and Jessi Steele won 8-3 at #2 doubles and each went on to win the singles match. Mooney topped Emily Holst 6-4, 6-0 at #3 singles, while Steele held on for a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over Terria Punturo at #4 singles.
In Wednesday's first match Whitworth again swept through the three doubles matches. Megan Wingfield and Claire Hemming cruised to an 8-2 win at #3 doubles to set the tone. Wingfield then dropped Hannah Geoffrey 6-2, 6-1 at #4 singles while Hemming shut out Polly Dalton 6-0, 6-0 at #5 singles.
Wednesday's nightcap was a runaway for the Pirates. Alli Marshall and Erica Bosman teamed to win 8-4 at #1 doubles and both won their singles match. Marshall beat Montana Wilson 6-3, 6-2, while Bosman defeated Kayla DiPaulo 6-1, 6-2.
Whitworth will complete its trip to Florida with a match against Hope College on Thursday.
