PARKLAND, Wash. – Whitworth made it a weekend road sweep of its Tacoma-area rivals with a 9-0 win at Pacific Lutheran in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match on Saturday afternoon.
Whitworth improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the NWC while the Lutes fell to 0-4, 0-2.
The Pirates won all three doubles matches to pull out to an early lead. Alli Marshall and Erica Bosman won 8-2 over Leah Newell and Tina Aarsvold, while Jessi Steele and Janell Talbot rolled to an 8-1 win over Allison McClure and Katherine Patton at #3 doubles.
The singles drama came at the top of the ladder where Marshall rallied back from a first set loss to defeat Newell 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9). Bosman defeated Wigen 6-2, 6-3 at #2 singles.
Saryn Mooney pulled away to defeat Aarsvold 7-5, 6-1 at #3 singles, while Wingifled had little trouble with McClure at #4 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Neither of the bottom two singles matches were close. Steele ran past Patton 6-0, 6-0 at #5 and Hemming topped Catherine Miolla 6-0, 6-2 at #6.
Whitworth will host its first home match of 2012 next Saturday when the Pirates take on Pacific (Ore.) at 10:00 am in the Scotford Tennis Center.
