LEWISTON, Idaho – Whitworth opened the 2012 women's tennis season with a split of matches at Lewis-Clark State College. The Pirates defeated College of Idaho 9-0 in the season opener, then fell to the host Warriors 8-1 in the nightcap.
Next weekend the Pirates will open up Northwest Conference play at Puget Sound (Friday) and Pacific Lutheran (Saturday).
Match 1 – Whitworth 9, Coll. of Idaho 0
The Pirates did not lose a set while rolling to the season opening victory.
The closest doubles match was an 8-3 win for Alli Marshall and Erica Bosman at #1 doubles. Claire Hemming and Saryn Mooney rolled to an 8-1 win at #2, while Siri Carlson and Morgan McDivitt swept an 8-0 victory at #3.
Marshall and Bosman won easily at the top two singles matches. Marshall beat Shae Stults 6-2, 6-1 at #1 and Bosman won 6-2, 6-0 over Hayley Hutchings at #2.
Carlson and Hemming both won 6-0, 6-0 at #5 and #6 respectively.
Match 2 – Lewis-Clark St. 8, Whitworth 1
Most of the matches were close, but the Warriors pulled them out to defeat the Pirates.
Whitworth picked up its only point of the match when Wingfield and Hemming beat Samantha Teigan and Netti Dayhuff 8-5 at #3 doubles. Mooney and Steele fell 8-4 at #2 doubles, while Bosman and Marshall lost 8-3 at #1 doubles.
Mooney went three sets with Barb Sneckner before losing 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 at #3 singles. Similarly, Steele dropped a close 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) decision to Teigan at #5 singles. Wingfield fell in two close sets to Miranda Duggan at #4 singles, as did Carlson at #6 singles.
Bosman was tied 5-7, 7-5 at #2 with Dorothy Chong before she had to withdraw with an injury.
