SPOKANE, Wash. – Kalyn Gill's first collegiate goal gave the Whitworth Pirates a 2-1 victory over the George Fox Bruins in Saturday afternoon's Northwest Conference women's soccer contest.

Gill's goal gave the Pirates (7-2-2, 5-1-1 NWC) their second straight victory, while the Bruins (3-5-1, 1-5-1 NWC) dropped their fifth straight match.

The Pirates got on the board in the 7th minute. Gabriella Coprivnicar's corner kick sailed through a crowd of players to Brixiada Mendoza. The freshman rolled a shot into the bottom-right corner of the net to put the Bucs up 1-0.

After the goal, both teams struggled to connect passes in their respective attacking thirds. Pirate center backs Amanda Gerard and Sydney Weiler played key roles in holding the Bruins scoreless. The duo combined with substitutes Emily Schwisow and Tatem Fredrickson to hold the Bruins without a shot on goal until there were two minutes remaining in the half.

George Fox broke through the Whitworth defense in the first minute of the second half. A cross into the 18-yard box bounced off Karlyn Stokes to Amy Hatter, who slid her first goal of the year past Molly Webster to even the score.

The Bruins continued their aggressive play after the goal, forcing Webster to make four saves in the second half. Michala Denn nearly gave George Fox the lead with 11 minutes remaining, but Webster made a diving stop to keep the match tied.

Gill broke the deadlock in the 84th minute. The freshman tookin a deflected pass near the top of the 18-yard box and booted a shot into the right side of the net. The goal was Gill's first as a Pirate.

Whitworth finished the match with a 9-8 advantage in shots and a 6-3 deficit in shots on goal. Webster saved five shots and George Fox's Annalisa Klien's saved one.

The Pirates will look to continue their winning streak Sunday afternoon when they take on Lewis & Clark. The Bucs and Pios square off at 12:00 p.m. on the Whitworth Soccer Field.
